On this day in 1963, a crew of Sud Aviation led by Jean Boulet, pushed a specially modified Super Frelon to its, setting a new speed record for helicopters at 341km/h (212mph) over a distance of 3 km. However, it was not built for speed, as it was designed as a heavy helicopter for the French Navy, with a waterproof hull, to ensure delivery to the aircraft carrier of heavy and bulky elements. For the record, in order to make the prototype lighter, the landing train was replaced by rubber skates, the rear fuselage had been redesigned, antennas were removed, a fairing was added over the rotor head and the engines were pushed beyond what had been allowed by their manufacturers. Nearly a hundred Super Frelon have been built.
