On this day in 1963, the Saab 105 training jet performed its first flight. Designed to replace the DH vampire of the Swedish Air Force, the Saab 105 have been playing this role without flinching for about 50 years, having just changed their Turbomeca Aubisque engines by more economical Williams FJ44 models a dozen years ago. The Austrian Air Force bought 40 of them in a light ground attack version, which are also still in operation.
