On this day in 1971, the Ilyushin il-76 made its first flight. Designed to replace the Antonov An-12 by lifting 40t of freight over 5000 km, it quickly became the new aerial workhorse of the Soviet forces and 37 other nations. Almost 1000 units have been manufactured.
