On this day in 1988, the prototype of the 747-400 sets the record for maximum weight above the 400t figure, 405.7t to be precise, breaking the record of the version 747-200 set in 1976 by more than 24t. This stretched version of Boeing's best seller long haul airliner had carried out its first flight two months ago. Only the giant aircraft Antonov An225 Mryia would be able to beat this record the following year.
