On this day in 1963, the French female aviator Jacqueline Auriol took away from her rival Jackie Cochrane the speed record over 100 km/h. Flying a reconnaissance Dassault Mirage IIIR, she pushed it to 2038 km/h (1267mph), more than 100km/h faster than the American who had previously set the record on F-104G six weeks earlier. It will take almost a year to Cochrane to win back the title (see June 1st)
