On this day in 1964, Jackie Cochrane, the famous American record-woman, broke her own speed record over the distance of 500 km in closed circuit, which she had set 11 years earlier to the day. Her Sabre Mk3 at the time had set the bar at 1068kmh (664mph), but now the number to beat would be 1814kmh (1127mph). Her ride for the occasion was a Lockheed f-104 G Starfighter, 'the missile with a woman in it'.
