On this day in 1943, some USAAF Republic P-47C were flying over the European theatre for the first time. Known for their ability to survive damages, the American P-47s would escort bombers over Germany, before being replaced by the Mustang which will demote them to ground attack missions. Thunderbolts have claimed more than 3700 victories on the conflict and 170.000 destroyed vehicles, but by losing 3500 of theirs in the process.
