On this day in 1942, the Messerschmitt me 262 took off for the first time using solely its BMW 003 jet engine (the first prototypes were assisted by a Jumo 210 piston engine in the nose). In its initial configuration, the Me 262 was fitted with a classic landing gear, which oriented the gaz plume to the ground and neutralized the effect of the tailplane. However, the test pilot managed to take off by braking slightly to get the tail up in the air. The British wouldn't fly the prototype of the Gloster Meteor until nine months later. More than 1400 Me 262 had been built, fitted with the Jumo 004 jet engine and tricycle landing gear, but they did not have a significant weight on the outcome of the conflict.
