On this day in 1929, three years after the M.39 who had brought them victory, the racing seaplane Macchi M.67 performed its maiden flight. Its 1800 hp Isotta Fraschini 18 cylinders engine was twice as powerful as the Fiat AS.2 and AS.3 of its predecessors, but much less reliable, and its career was much less glorious. A first one was lost over the Lake Garda the following month, killing the pilot. Italy asked the English for a postponement of the Schneider cup, in order to have time to finish the development, but they refused. Two poorly prepared M.67 took part in the 1929 Calshot race in September. The first nearly crashed when the cockpit filled up with smoke, and the second scalded its pilot when a coolant hose gave up, leaving the victory to the Supermarine S.6
