On this day in 1993, under the implementation of the START disarmament agreements, the first of 363 strategic bombers Boeing B-52 Stratofortress is dismantled at AMARG in Davis Monthan AFB, Arizona. So that Russian satellites can monitor the process, the airplanes are chopped into five large parts which are then set apart in the desert. The Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (start) had been signed by Bush Sr and Gorbachev two years before.
