On this day in 1924, the newest fighter of the US Army Air Corps, the Curtiss PW-8, makes the first transcontinental flight over the United States in less than one day. Flying off New York at dawn, the plane would land in San Francisco at dusk after having traveled 4300km/ 2670mi in 20h38 with stopovers in Ohio, Missouri, Nebraska, Wyoming and Utah. The PW-8 was an adaptation of the R-6 race plane, which won the Pulitzer Trophy in 1921 (283kmh/ 176mph) and the Schneider cup in 1923 (286kmh/178mph). The PW-8 is the first of the P-1, P-2, P-3, P-5 and P-6 Hawk series, of which more than 250 units have been built.
