On this day in 1947, Colonel Boyd of the US Army Air Force, head of the flight tests on the base of Muroc (today's Edwards) took away the speed record over 3 km from the British. flying a specially modified Lockheed P-80 nicknamed 'Racey' (reduced canopy, clipped wings, more powerful engine), he is the first to be timed beyond the 1000kmh (624mph), when the English Gloster Meteor had struggled to reach to 991kmh. The record would be beaten twice at Muroc before the end of 1947. It would take six years for the British to be able to claim it again one last time (Neville Boyd on a Hawker Hunter)
