On this day in 1935, the prototype of the Messerschmitt bf 109 made its first flight. Without a Daimler DB600 engine ready in due time, it had been fitted with a British Rolls Royce Kestrel for its first take off. In exchange, Rolls Royce received a Heinkel he 70 to serve as a flying test bench. The 109 will make its combat debut against red Ratas in the sky of Spain in 1937 and will be the spear of the Luftwaffe until 1945, although the Fw 190 was superior to it from 1941. Derivatives will fly up to 1965. More than 33,000 Bf 109 have been built.
