- Information
On this day in 1924, the first Russian metal aircraft designed by Tupolev, the ANT-2, made its first flight. Two years earlier, the Russians had developed a high-characteristics aluminum alloy, the Kolchugaluminum, for which a committee had been appointed to assess the added value for many applications, including aviation. The committee was led by Andrei Nikolayevich Tupolev, an aerodynamicist engineer who worked for the TsAGI research centre. The plane was named after his initials, before he founded its own design office and his planes would be known as Tu-xx.
