On this day in 1927, the Boeing Model 40B made its first flight. Originally designed for airmail service, the Model 40 was successful only after being modified with a lighter engine and a cabin that can accommodate passengers. As a consequnce, Model 40B was the first Boeing airliner, and Boeing will use it to start their own airline, which would later become United Airlines.
