- Information
On this day in 1962, the Sikorsky S-64 Skycrane was flying for the first time. Its purpose was unique: be as light as possible to be able to lift the heaviest load possible, so it ended up as an helicopter stripped to the bones. The 9600 shp of its two turbines were able to lift a 12t payload when itself was weighing only 8t. The Skycrane would be used by the US army in Vietnam to move heavy vehicles and recover wrecks.
