On this day in 1948, the US navy deployed its first jet on aircraft carrier. The pilots of the VF-17 had received their first McDonnell FH-1 Phantom nine months earlier, and it is now 24 aircraft that were landing onboard USS Saipan. This was McDonnell's first production fighter and the starting point of a large lineage of shipbased fighters: F2H Banshee, F3H demon and the legendary F4H, second Phantom of the name.
