On this day in 2009, the Boeing P-8A Poseidon was taking off, a multimission maritime aircraft derived from 737-800 for the US Navy. The plane had been deeply modified: a weapon bay aft of the wing for five torpedoes, 4 hardpoints under the wings, a forest of antennas and sensors of all kinds, beefed-up alternators to supply them, extra fuel and the wing of the 737-900 to lift all this. Intended to replace the venerable P-3 Orion, more than 150 have been ordered by the great maritime nations (Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Korea, UK, India and USA)
