On this day in 1942, sixteen B-25 Mitchell bombers launched from the deck of USS Hornet, destination Tokyo. The surprise attack led by Lt Col Doolittle was a direct answer to the attack on Pearl Harbor 4 months earlier. Unable to get back to their starting point after dropping their bombs on the Japanese island, the bombers still managed to reach the Chinese coast at night, and the men bailed out of their aircraft. One landed in Russia and was confiscated, its crew interned. A special thought for Dick Cole, a 27-year-old Doolittle copilot at the time, who was the last survivor of the group and left us just 10 days ago at age 103.
