On this day in 1944, Howard Hughes and Jack Frye, owner and president of TWA, set a record of duration for transcontinental flight in less than 7 hours flying the second production L-049 Constellation. The aircraft was painted in the company's colors for the occasion even if it actually belonged to the USAAF. Actress Ava Gardner was also on board with them. Five years earlier, Hughes and Frye had asked Lockheed to design the airliner of the future. The war had somehow changed Lockheed's priorities a bit, but the Constellation, another creation by Kelly Johnson, was subsequently a huge commercial success.
