On this day in 1961, on board of what looks like a conditioned cannonball called Vostok, Yuri Gagarin flew around the Earth in an orbit that will remain in history as the first manned spaceflight. As it descended under its parachute, Gagarin opened as planned the hatch at 7km altitude and bailed out of the capsule to end the flight under his own parachute. However, in order to have the flight approved by FAI, Gagarin had to lie during the press conference stating that he had landed aboard his ship. The Soviets will only admit that, as well as lying about the launch location, only 10 years later. 20 years day for day after Gagarin, John Young and Bob Crippen performed the maiden space flight of the brand new Columbia space shuttle.
