On this day in 1933, warrant officer Agello pushed the 24 cylinders of the FIAT engine from his Macchi M.C.72 racing seaplane to their maximum, leaving aside the fact that two pilots before him (Monti and Bellini) died attempting the same thing on this aircraft. Even if the M.C.72 came too late to challenge the Schneider cup definitely won by the English, Agello set the record at 682 km/h (424mph). Despite its bulky pair of floats, it was still 200 km/h (130mph) quicker than the fastest landplane of the time, the Gee Bee R1. 18 months later, Agello would set the record at 709 km/h (441mph). No other seaplane has been able to challenge this record since 1934.
