On this day in 1967, the Gazelle SA 340 from Sud Aviation performed its maiden flight. The 2nd prototype of the Gazelle would be fitted with a Fenestron® replacing the conventional tail rotor, which will become the brand signature of what will merge into Aerospatiale, then Eurocopter and finally Airbus Helicopters. The Fenestron® allows lowering the noise level while improving safety both on the ground and in flight. Originally designed to replace the Alouette III within the French army aviation, nearly 1800 Gazelle would eventually be produced and operated by no less than 25 armed forces.
