On this day in 1917, The SPAD XIII, the latest design from Louis Béchereau, made its first flight. Its Hispano 8b engine developing 200hp, it would replace the SPAD VII and the 150hp of its Hispano 8a, considered too slow in 1916. The SPAD XIII was ordered to more than 8000 units and fought for France, the United States and the United Kingdom. Many pilots would become aces flying the SPAD.
