On this day in 1996, the Lockheed / Boeing stealthy drone RQ-3 Darkstar made its first flight. Completely autonomous and allegedly undetectable, this 21m wide aircraft was a precursor. However, it especially surprised its designers by manifesting an aerodynamic instability that will cost them the prototype less than a month later. Only 4 Darkstar would be built when the program was canceled by the Pentagon
