On this day in 1949, Convair put in flight the D version of the gigantic bomber B-36 Peacemaker. Not completely satisfied by the 21000shp of its six 4360cu.in radial engines of the initial version, Convair added up four J47 jet engines in pods for an extra 10t of thrust for take-off and dash speed over target. They were shutdown in normal cruise.
