On this day in 1981, the McDonnell Douglas KC-10A Extender entered in service in the US air force at Barksdale AFB, Louisiana. Derived from the DC-10-30 long haul airliner, the KC-10 was the first tanker to have a deported command console for the refueling probe, the officer observing the refueled planes through a camera.
