On this day in 1998, the X-38 prototype built by Scaled Composites makes its first flight after being dropped at altitude by a B-52. Designed as a space rescue boat, the Crew Return Vehicle was intended to be docked at the ISS in a way to be able, if necessary, to bring urgently an astronaut back to Earth in case of a medical problem or damage on the station. It had the particularity of landing suspended under a wide parafoil. The program was canceled 14 years later.
