On this day in 1956, Peter Twiss pushes his Fairey Delta 2 at 1132mph over a 9 miles track at 38000ft between Chichester and Portsmouth, breaking the previous record held by an American F-100C by more than 300mph. It is the first time a British speed record exceeds 1000mph.
