On this day in 1968, the US Army notifies Bell Helicopter its Jet Ranger has been selected for the Light Observation Helicopters program. Bell had lost a 1st time this competition in 1965 (won by Hughes), with their ugly YOH-4. After having corrected the main flaws and especially the aesthetic, and after Hughes admitted they could not fulfill production requirements for the OH-6, the US Army bought the Jet Ranger and renamed it OH-58 a Kiowa. More than 2200 will be produced
