On this day in 1999, Bertrand Piccard and Brian Jones take off from the small alpine village of Château d'Oex (renowned for its hot air balloon festival in January) to attempt the first nonstop balloon flight round of the world aboard the Breitling Orbiter 3. This is the 3rd attempt at Piccard. The first had been aborted due to a technical issue, and the second had hit a ban on China's overflight (picture : Piccard's hot air balloon looking like Orbiter 3, but different from the one for the round the world flight)
