On this day in 1959, The French prototype Nord Griffon II, powered by a turbo-ramjet, breaks the speed record over 100 km at 1643km/h (1021mph), or nearly 500km/h (300mph) faster than the previous record on a F4D Skyray. André Turcat, flying the Griffon for the record, would push it later to Mach2,19, limited only by the temperature of the structure at those speeds.
