On this day in 1959, the Strategic Air command withdrew from service the Convair B-36 Peacemaker, superseded by the new jet bombers such as B-47 and B-52. It required six 3500hp engines with a three-blade propeller each, assisted by 4 jet engines of 230 kg thrust to lift its maximum weight of 186t/410.000lbs. Of the 384 built, only four airframes survived.
