- Information
On this day in 1969, aerial transport shifts to a new era when the prototype of the Boeing 747 City of Everett takes off for the first time out of Paine Field, north of Seattle. Everything is superlative on this machine which can board nearly 400 passengers, hence its nickname, the Jumbo Jet. It requires 150t of fuel to achieve its 6000 miles, nearly as much as the max take-off weight of a Boeing 707, its 10-year-old predecessor.
