- Information
On this day in 1968, a Saturn IB rocket was fired from Cape Canaveral without any astronaut, but with the first Lunar Module to be sent into space. The mission was named Apollo 5, and it allowed to validate both descent and ascent engines of the LM, as well as the separation of the two stages, a pre-requisite for the first manned mission of the LM (Apollo 9) a year later.
