On this day in 1961, a B-58 Hustler from the US Air Force broke the speed record over 2000km (1243mi). On a circuit from Edwards AFB to Yuma, the crew took the supersonic bomber to 1709km/h (1062mph), which crushed the previous record held by the Russians at 960km/h (597mph). Nevertheless, in France five months earlier, René Bigand had taken a Mirage IV over 1000 at to 1822km/h (1132mph).
