On this day in 1988, Gregory 'Pappy' Boyington was defeated by a long illness. It was the 2nd time that he died since the U.S. Marines ace with the 26 victories had already been declared dead in January 1944, following a mission on Rabaul that he did not return from. He was actually recovered by a Japanese submarine. He was posthumously awarded the medal of honor, the highest American military honor, but after 20 months of captivity, he received it in the flesh from President Truman's hands. The legend of Boyington is inseparable from the Vought F4U Corsair and its distinctive gull wing (here is the Planes of Fame aircraft).
