On this day in 1954, a DH.106 Comet operated by BOAC disappeared during a flight between Rome and London following rupture of the fuselage at windows level. It was the 4th of this type to disappear under similar circumstances in just over a year. Comets were grounded until further notice. After rigorous tests, it was concluded that the cabin pressure cycles (then a novelty on an airliner) were stressing the structure with fatigue and that the Comet could not bear more than 1000 cycles. The lost aircraft had been cycled almost 1300 times. This accident changed the design rules for commercial airliners forever.
